Growth and Challenge (leaders)

Growth and Challenge (leaders)

In summary...

Whilst this might seem counterintuitive in trying to reduce workload, teachers in our research reported gaining enjoyment from their involvement in different activities. This was sometimes the case even for very new teachers.

Being given opportunities for growth and challenge can help teachers to gain from the role, as well as what they put into it. Teachers’ own learning and growth is an important element which can contribute to their overall sense of job satisfaction and accomplishment. Being asked to take on additional responsibility may also give teachers a sense of value and recognition.

There are a few ways that teachers can gain this growth and challenge:

  • Identify areas of extra interest or responsibility that might be suitable (e.g. mentoring newer teachers, being involved in a school event or project, leading a particular CPD event).
  • Ensure teachers are well supported in any new work.
  • Encourage teachers to reflect on the skills and learning they have gained from their experiences, including those which they have found challenging.
  • Ensure that any additional responsibilities are properly recognised within workload planning.
  • Support teachers to identify what CPD and responsibilities that may be of particular interest to them.

But what really matters is what works for teachers and students at your school – what would help your teachers to be able to grow and develop?
