Increasing Satisfaction Through Growth and Challenge

Increasing Satisfaction Through Growth and Challenge

In summary...

Whilst this might seem counterintuitive in trying to reduce workload, teachers in our research reported gaining enjoyment from their involvement in different activities. This was sometimes the case even for very new teachers.

Our research found that your own learning and growth is an important element which can contribute to your overall sense of job satisfaction and accomplishment. Deciding to take on additional responsibility may also help to give a sense of value and recognition. Some teachers in our research found that an additional role gave them a break from the intensity of lesson planning and classroom teaching.

There are a few ways that you may gain this growth and challenge:

  • Identifying areas of extra interest or responsibility that might be suitable (eg mentoring newer teachers, being involved in a school event or project, leading a particular CPD event), and discussing these with your head of department or senior leader.
  • Making time to reflect on the skills and learning you have gained from your experiences, including those which you have found challenging.
  • Ensuring that any additional responsibilities you are given are properly recognised within workload planning.
  • Setting a regular time where you research and identify what CPD and/or responsibilities that may be of particular interest to you.

But what really matters is what works for you – what would help to you to be able to grow and develop?
